Nyepi, the Balinese new year celebration is one of the most unique and exciting events I’ve wittnessed and grateful to have been given the opportunity to partake in the parade with a fire dance.
Each village in the entire island creates one of these demonic ogoh-ogoh statues and parades the streets to fight the evil spirits. Our fire dance was in this regard as well.
The following day is a day of silence where the entire island takes off for meditation, rest, and for some, fasting and silence. No one is allowed on the streets from 6pm-6am and the lights are kept very low and fire is restricted.
This night happened to also be the new moon so the sky was completely lit up with more stars than I’ve ever seen in my entire life!
It was truly the most beautiful day/night of silence. I adventured down from where we were camping to the speedy river for some wild river treking and waterfall climbing and then the day after ended up spontaneously going white water rafting. Needless to say I felt super charged after all the time in nature. Had some nice ideas come through about Flowga adventure retreats I intend to create.
I have been practicing, studying and training a lot here since arriving in January so it was nice to feel like I was truly enjoying this holiday like the Balinese were.
